
REFLECTION (Journals)
In the first day of the experience for this module is mostly in my expectations. About Game Studies, I feel like it is about theoretical in game development such as what makes games, why game exists, and importance of games, etc. Other than that, our lecturer, Dr, Charles also briefly went through the module booklet with us. There also several tasks need to complete such as preparing personal game history and discuss with teammates about game ideas for our project.

I have formed a group with my friends, Alden and Amirul and also new faces, Abigail and Allyssa from BDCM (Bachelor of Design in Creative Media). It is great to have teammates from different background which can have more perspective of ideas and opinion during discussions or brainstorming. In class, we come up with many game ideas and discuss the genre of the games. At first, we want to create a horror games with PvP or multiplayer elements. Then we listed out some examples such as Dark Deception, FNAF, Dead by Daylight, Phasmophobia, etc. However, we also have an online meeting on Discord during weekend to think about other genre games such as surviving games like strategy on managing own resources. Then we discuss which approaches we going to use for the game development, and we have some good options such as Krunker and RPGmaker. Thus, we decided to use RPGMaker to create the game. I have not used this software before, but it is interesting and fun to learn.

As my role and primary task in this project is game development and prototype that mainly in charge of game’s maps design. In this development progress, I have learned a lot of things like communicate with other groups members to understand what they want for the theme of the maps and what they wished to see in the game. I tried my best to make the maps that can impress our players. I took some references from Internet when creating the maps. The references of the in-game maps when main character is in ‘real world’ basically is based on the Japan small town in real life as well as from Anime such as the apartment and streets design. It is really fun when creating the maps or scenes of the game. However, the build-in materials of the map design in RPG Maker MV are limited. Therefore, I can only use these materials and try to create the maps that able correspond as much as possible with my expectations.

We also have other extra exercise to help us to have better understanding and learning in games this topic. About the task personal game history, I completed it using wix.com and google slides as I’m going to create an e-portfolio. I did enjoy doing my personal game history as it brings back my childhood memories and I realized that games keep evolving as it become more advance and fun at the same time. As other exercises we completed it in form of group. Each of us record small parts of the contents and compile together to create the videos.

At last of this reflection, I would say that our game or projects might not be perfect which can be better by making improvement, but I felt satisfied as we do put a lot of effort in it and already tried ours best. I want to appreciate our lecturer, Dr Charles as he gave us much critical advises so we can make improvement to our game ideas and project. I also want to appreciate my group mates as well. They are very kind and passionate about our project and I did enjoy working with them. We help each other and I’m the person that not really good at expressing my own feelings and ideas. However, they still tried to understand me and talk to me. It makes me feel like I want to contribute more to this project as well as our team. I felt really lucky that I’m part of the team and I’m looking forward to work with them in the future.

In the first phase of game development in our project, we finalize the games ideas we have discussed so far, and we decide to create an RPG surviving games. In the game’s settings, the protagonist is a student who need to survive through his/her final semester in university. Player needs to manage the stress and hunger in the games and try to reach a good ending. Our idea was already approved by lecturer, and we have basic structure of the games. However, with more inspirations and ideas we got, we slightly modify our game as changing storyline and gameplay. We changed the genre of our game to JRPG which need to add turn-based battle element into our game. It is because that we want to enrich our gameplay rather than just storytelling.
